「-Let's begin the road to Johannesburg in Tokyo-」
（東京からヨハネスブルグへ）

2001年10月13日、14日の両日、「アジア・太平洋環境会議（エコアジア2001）」が東京で開催され、テプファーUNEP事務局長も来日し、出席しました。この会議は、アジア・太平洋地域の環境大臣等が自由に意見交換を行い環境政策対話の推進を図ることを目的とするもので、ヨハネスブルグサミットの準備や有識者会議の発足が話し合われました。
　
テプファー事務局長は、13日に行われた記者会見で、「加藤登紀子UNEP親善大使には、音楽を通じて、世界の人々の心に届く形で、環境問題の解決に大きく貢献してもらっており、御礼を申し上げたい。この度、国連のアナン事務総長及び国連がノーベル平和賞を受賞したが、受賞の理由の一つに国連の環境問題の解決への貢献があげられている。アジアでは、今後、環境問題に関する啓発活動がますます重要になる。加藤親善大使の役割は大きい。」と述べました。

また、13日夜の地球環境行動会議（ＧＥＡ）の地球環境警鐘会議との合同レセプションにおいて、加藤登紀子親善大使は「SEEDS IN THE　ＦＩＥＬＤＳ -Let's begin the　road to Johannesburg in Tokyo- 東京からヨハネスブルグへ」と題して、日本と南アフリカのミュージシャンによるメッセージコンサートを行いました。加藤登紀子親善大使は、榊記彌栄さん、原田真二さん、斎藤ノブさん、そしてSibusio Victor　Masondoさんら南アフリカのミュージシャンとともに10曲以上を披露しました。最後には、予期せぬハプニングでしたが、テプファー事務局長が壇上に駆け上がり、「私たちUNEPの親善大使のすばらしいパフォーマンスに感動した。ヨハネスブルグサミットにもぜひ来てもらいたい。僕の歌声は聞きたくないでしょうからすぐにステージから下りるけれども、本当に登紀子さんには感謝している。ありがとう。」
と会場の参加者に向かって語りかけるという出来事もありました。

The joint reception of the ECO ASIA 2001 and the Conference on Global Environmental Crisis by GEA

「-Let's begin the road to Johannesburg in Tokyo-」

The 10th Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific (ECO ASIA 2001) was held in Tokyo on 13 and 14 October 2001.  Dr. Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of UNEP made an official visit to Japan to participated in the important meeting for Asia and the Pacific.  The Congress had clear
objectives to exchange opinions freely among ministers and other
policy-makers in the area of Asia and the Pacific in order to discuss
environmental policy promotion, preparation for the World Summit on
Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa to be held in September 2002, and establishment of the Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED).

Dr. Toepfer noted at a press conference on 13 October that he would like tothank Ms. Tokiko Kato, UNEP Special Envoy, for her great contributions toraising public awareness on the environmental issues through her music in amanner that can be reached to the heart of people.  Recently, the NobelPeace Prize was awarded to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the UN.  Oneof the reasons for the award was due to the UN’s contributions to trying tosolve the environmental problems in the world.  UNEP Executive Directorunderlined that the role of Ms. Kato as UNEP Special Envoy will be moregreater than ever.

In the joint reception of the ECO ASIA 2001 and the Conference on Global
Environmental Crisis by Global Environmental Action (GEA), Ms. Kato held a concert titled "SEEDS IN THE FIELDS -- Let's begin the road to Johannesburg in Tokyo -- from Tokyo to Johannesburg" with Japanese and South African musicians.  UNEP Special Envoy sang more than ten songs with Ms. Kimie Sakaki, Mr. Shinji Harada, Mr. Nobu Saito and South African musician such as Mr. Sibusio Victor Masondo.

At the very end of the concert, it was a happening -- Dr. Toepfer, run up
to the centre stage and expressed his gratitude to the participants.  He
said, “I was very much impressed by the wonderful performance of our UNEP's Special Envoy, Ms. Kato Tokiko.  I would really hope to see her in
Johannesburg next year.  My song might not be welcomed here, so I won’t
sing, but, once again, I greatly appreciate Ms. Kato’s performance.  Thank
you very much!"
