Orient オリエントの雫
はじめてヨーロッパに行ったとき、大西洋が真ん中にある地図を見た。右の隅の方に小さな島をやっと見つけたとき、当然のことなのにちょっとショックを受けた。ユーラシア大陸の東の端は世界の端。日本はどこの国からも一番遠い国なのだ。日本では太平洋が真ん中にある世界地図ばかりみているから、うっかり気付かない。
オリエントとはヨーロッパから日本までの大きな時間と空間の広がりを埋めるブリッジだと私は思っている。
ヨーロッパの音楽を最も身近なものとして育った私は、私の中の日本にたどり着くために、このオリエントのブリッジはどうしても渡らなければいけない謎を解く鍵。スペイン、ギリシャ、アラブ、インド、モンゴル、中国、韓国・・・。ヨーロッパから見れば幾つものカーテンの向こうに日本がある。そしてその全ての文化が吹き寄せられた島が日本。
フランスで発売したアルバム「Cypango」をプロデュースし、全てのフランス語詩を私のために書いてくれたピエール・グロスは、「西の端からずっと東にあこがれてきた私と、東の端から西に向かって歩き続けているあなたが、両方から腕をさしのべれば地球を抱くことになるはず。」と、このアルバムのグローバルな願いを語った。
ワールドミュージックという言葉で表現される無尽蔵な音の花畑は今、地球を様々に美しく彩っている。宗教の違いや肌の色の違いは悲しい対立を産んだけれど、音楽の色の違いが戦争を呼び起こしたことはなく、地球の上をかけめぐる風たちは、時にはその色と色を重ね、知らず知らず互いのバイブレーションを共鳴させてきた。
「その大きな風の中にいたい。」それが一人の歌手としての私の夢。

The first time I went to Europe I saw a map on which the Atlantic Ocean was shown in the center. I found small islands on the edge of the upper right-hand corner -- nothing special, but I was a little shocked. On the map the eastern edge of Eurasia was shown as the edge of the world. Japan would be the country farthest away from all others. In Japan we usually see maps that have the Pacific Ocean in the center, so we tend not to notice these things.
I consider the Orient a bridge between Europe and Japan, crossing over a gap of time and space. I grew up with European music closest to my heart, so I found it necessary to come across this bridge, like a path to solving the mystery of how to get to the Japan inside of me. Japan was on the other side of layers of curtains, Spain, Greece, the Arab nations, India, Mongolia, China and Korea. For me, Japan was an island made up of all these cultures.
Pierre Gross, who produced my album, “Cypango,” sold in France, wrote French words for all the songs. He told me his wish for the album: “I was coming from the western edge, adoring the east; you have kept walking to the west from the eastern edge. If we reach our arms together, we can hold the earth.”
The world of music, which is like flowering fields of abundant sounds, colors the globe in various ways. Differences of religion and skin color have produced tragic conflicts, but differences among colors of music have never caused a war. Instead, resonant sounds have been created with various vibrations by the wind that blows across the earth. I wish to be a part of this big wind-- that is my dream as a singer.
